This is how it goes: In 1992, I was working at Master Musicians Drum Shop, which was located in Annapolis, Maryland. I had just sold another vintage drum set to a guy named David Dominach, who worked for Waterfront Studios, which was located in Hoboken, New Jersey. I asked him, on the phone, why he was buying so many vintage drum sets. He told me that his boss liked playing vintage drums on his own recordings. I asked him who his boss was, and he said it was Lenny Kravitz.
This picture was taken at the Blues Alley jazz club in Washington, D.C., in the spring of 1999. In
May of 1992, Ro Harrison and myself, loaded up the Master Musicians
van, with a full load of vintage drums, and headed up north to Hoboken.
When we got there, Lenny was busy laying tracks down, for his latest
album ("Are You Gonna Go My Way"). Lenny has always played
most of the instruments on all of his recordings. On this day, he was
working on the drum track for a song that would eventually be titled,
"Believe". Waterfront Studios no longer exists. It was
torn down to make way for luxury waterfront condominiums. |
